Women Journalists Urged to Uphold Integrity Amid Digital Challenges

Kuala lumpur: Women journalists not only have to be proficient in technology, but also hold on to journalism values and principles in facing current challenges in the media landscape. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad emphasized the critical balance between technological mastery and journalistic integrity during her speech at the 55th anniversary of Persatuan Wartawan Wanita Malaysia (PERTAMA).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Noraini highlighted the rapid spread of information through social media and digital platforms. These developments have facilitated the dissemination of fake news and propaganda, which in turn have eroded public trust in media institutions. While mastery of digital tools is essential, she stressed the importance of maintaining uncompromising integrity in journalism.

She further stated that PERTAMA, with its rich experience and history, bears the significant responsibility of upholding ethical and principled journalism. The organization should serve as a stronghold for truth-based journalism. This sentiment was shared during the event, which was attended by PERTAMA president Datuk Sariha Mohd Ali and advisors Datuk Jamelah Bakar and Datin Rohana Mustapha.

Dr Noraini also noted that journalists today are not merely reporters but advocates for social justice and national awareness. She acknowledged PERTAMA's vital role over the past 55 years in uniting women journalists and championing their professional interests in Malaysia. Women journalists, she suggested, have a unique role in bridging social realities with national aspirations, bringing neglected issues to the forefront.

In addition, Dr Noraini shared her ministry's initiatives in innovation-based industry developments, specifically highlighting the production of sustainable aviation fuel from used cooking oil. She noted that this not only adds value to existing resources but also showcases the capabilities of local scientists in advancing related technology. The increasing demand for sustainable aviation fuel on the international market presents new opportunities for the country's industry.
