Jakarta:National midfielder Stuart Wilkin is set to face Indonesia for the first time as Malaysia's Harimau Malaya competes against the hosts in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 Division 1 Group A match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium tomorrow.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wilkin acknowledged the challenge ahead but expressed confidence in Malaysia's ability to compete against the Garuda squad, even in front of a likely capacity home crowd. He emphasized the importance of preparation and the strength of the Malaysian team.

Wilkin, who plays for Johor Darul Ta'zim, debuted internationally in 2022 and highlighted the need for focus following Malaysia's 3-0 win over Bangladesh. Malaysia will encounter an Indonesian team led by coach John Herdman, fresh off a 2-0 victory against Singapore. Indonesia is ranked 118th globally, 18 places higher than Malaysia at 136th.

Historically, Malaysia has a slight edge over Indonesia, with 34 wins in 85 encounters, while Indonesia has secured 33 victories and 18 games ended in draws. The last encounter in the 2021 AFF Cup group stage ended in a 4-1 win for Indonesia, whereas Malaysia triumphed 3-2 at GBK during the 2019 World Cup/2023 Asian Cup qualifying campaign.

Forward Fergus Tierney is eager to make a mark if selected by interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe. Tierney stressed the importance of focus, irrespective of the large crowd support for Indonesia. Malaysia will conclude their Group A matches against Singapore at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung on October 1.
