SEREMBAN: The Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) remains consistent in ensuring that the sport contributes medals, targeting at least one gold at the SEA Games in Thailand next year. Its president Datuk Chong Kim Fatt expressed optimism about achieving this target, citing the rigorous preparation that began last month, along with the finalisation of athlete selection for the sport.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Chong highlighted the challenges posed by the new event format introduced by Thailand, which has reduced the number of events from 21 to 14 or 15. Despite these changes, he is determined to pursue the target by requesting the National Olympic Committee of Thailand to revert to the old format, which he believes would be more convenient for the athletes.

At the Achievement Certificate Award Ceremony for the Negeri Sembilan Wushu Team, internationally successful athletes such as Ng Yu Xuan, Wong Zi Hong, Pang Pui Yee, Calvin Lee Wai Leong, and Wong Weng Son showcased their talents. The event u
nderscored the commitment to nurturing talent within the sport.

Chong emphasized the importance of continuous support from relevant parties, such as the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in fostering new talent and increasing grants for various programmes to develop the sport further in Malaysia.

Wong Weng Son, a 32-year-old retired athlete, reflected on his successful career, expressing gratitude for the support he received from Datuk Chong and his teammates. With no immediate future plans, Wong mentioned his interest in motorsports, although he acknowledged the financial resources required to pursue it. Wong’s career included significant achievements at both national and international levels, marking a successful 22-year journey in wushu.
