Kuala lumpur: A reunion between Malaysia’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games men’s doubles silver medallists Tan Wee Kiong and Goh V Shem is not on the cards, as the former remains fully committed to his current partner Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the speculation arose after Wee Kiong and Nur Mohd Azriyn became the latest shuttlers to sign with Malaysia’s homegrown badminton brand FELET, which also has V Shem under its roster. Wee Kiong stated, “At the moment, there’s no plan for that. Although we’re both under FELET now, my partnership with Azriyn has been going very smoothly.”
Wee Kiong expressed gratitude for the sponsor’s trust and support, emphasizing their focus on working hard and aiming for better results in upcoming tournaments. V Shem and Wee Kiong had claimed silver in Rio 2016 after a closely contested match against China’s Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan, with scores of 21-16, 11-21, 21-23.
The former world number one duo decided to part ways in August 2021. Wee Kiong, now 36 years old, formed a partnership with Nur Mohd Azriyn in 2023. Meanwhile, V Shem is currently competing with his South Korean partner, Choi Sol Gyu.
