Weak Irrigation and Drainage Systems Identified as Key Factors in Declining Rice Yields: Mohamad Sabu

Ayer Hitam: Weak irrigation and drainage systems nationwide have been identified as the primary cause of declining rice yields, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. The Minister emphasized the urgency of addressing these structural issues to ensure a stable supply of rice.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced the Infrastructure Development Project aimed at supporting the Five-Season Padi Planting Programme Over Two Years. This initiative is crucial for maintaining a steady rice supply and involves areas under the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA). The project is structured as a public-private partnership, where private entities will initially finance the development and maintenance of padi infrastructure. The government will reimburse these costs upon project completion.

Addressing the launch of the Infrastructure Development Project to Support the Five-Season Padi Planting Programme Over Two Years (Phase 1) in Pida 4, Ayer Hitam, Mohamad Sabu highlighted the involvement of the MMC Group. Through its subsidiary, MMC Infra Padi Sdn Bhd, the group secured the Phase 1 project to develop and maintain 15 Tertiary Irrigation System Blocks and undertake the Comprehensive Rehabilitation of the Pedu Dam. The total cost for these initiatives is RM1 billion.

The concession agreement for these projects was signed on December 19 of last year. Mohamad Sabu expressed hope that this initiative will strengthen the rice industry, ensuring a stable and sufficient supply while safeguarding the welfare of farmers and industry players. He also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Kedah and Perlis state governments with the Federal Government to ensure timely project completion and tangible benefits for farmers.
