Volunteer Fireman Drowns In Lahat Mines Lake

Lahat: The body of a member of the Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) who was feared drowned after falling into a lake at the Lahat Mines near Pasir Puteh last night was found tonight. Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad confirmed that the victim, Ka-Jun Cheng Siew, 25, was discovered at approximately 10.18 pm by the fire and rescue team during a surface search at the lake. According to BERNAMA News Agency, the victim was located floating about 70 metres from the bank, near where he was believed to have submerged. The Perak JBPM had received information about the incident at 7.27 pm. In response, teams from the Pasir Puteh and Ipoh fire and rescue stations, along with assistance from PBS Menglembu, Pekan Baru, and Pasir Pinji, were dispatched to the scene. The victim had been participating in training and boat testing activities at the lake since 4 pm with his team, comprising 16 PBS members using three boats. Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Sayani Saidon, who visited the site, mentioned that the victim initially wore a personal flotation device (PFD) at the start of the training. However, he re-boarded the boat without the PFD towards the end of the session around 7.10 pm. The victim boarded the boat with a driver, and both were believed to have fallen into the lake during a U-turn maneuver. While the driver attempted to rescue the victim, he also fell into the lake. Other PBS members managed to rescue the driver, but the victim was believed to have submerged until he was found later that night.
