Kuala Lumpur:Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) graduates have been encouraged to maintain integrity, responsibility, and sound judgment as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the workforce and society.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UTP Chancellor Tan Sri Dr Mohd Hassan Marican emphasized that while AI offers benefits such as improved efficiency and accelerated product development, it also presents challenges like misinformation, job displacement, and regulatory difficulties. He highlighted AI's potential to generate convincing yet inaccurate information, which could undermine public trust if not managed properly.
Dr Mohd Hassan noted that concerns over technological advancements are not new, citing historical innovations like mechanization and the printing press. He stressed that while technology's potential outcomes are influenced by human choices, the distinction between feasible and appropriate actions grows crucial with advancing technology.
He advised graduates, especially from technology-focused institutions, to consider ethical aspects such as safety and environmental sustainability in addition to technical expertise. He underscored the importance of integrity and responsibility in guiding professional choices and emphasized leadership through positive impact rather than positions held.
Dr Mohd Hassan further reflected on UTP's founding mission to develop technological capabilities and human capital for national progress. As UTP approaches its 30th anniversary, the university celebrates its diverse alumni's contributions both locally and internationally.
The 26th Convocation Ceremony, held on November 1 and 2, saw 1,659 graduates from 34 countries, with a notable representation from Chile, Dominica, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago. The ceremony also highlighted academic excellence with awards presented to outstanding graduates and marked a historic moment with the conferment of UTP's first Professor Emeritus title to Datuk Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil Mohamed Hani for his significant contributions to the university.
