Use Electricity, Water Prudently During Aidilfitri – Fadillah

Kuala lumpur: The public is urged to use electricity and water prudently and efficiently, especially during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri season, which typically sees increased consumption of both resources. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasized the importance of efficient usage during this time when electricity demand for residential users is estimated to rise significantly.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah highlighted that electricity demand can increase by 20 to 40 percent compared to normal usage during the festive season. He suggested simple electricity-saving measures, such as turning off lights and appliances when not in use, avoiding standby mode, setting air-conditioner temperatures between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, and opting for appliances with high energy efficiency ratings.

For water usage, an increase of 30 to 35 percent is expected in most states popular with people returning home for the festival. Fadillah stated that water supply operators are prepared to meet the increased demand efficiently. The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is also ensuring operators have contingency plans for unexpected incidents during the festive season. The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), through SPAN, aims for a maximum daily per capita water usage of 160 litres, aligning with international benchmarks.

Fadillah recommended various water-saving measures, such as fixing internal pipe leaks, using alternative water sources like rainwater for non-essential activities, practising disciplined usage, and ensuring taps are tightly closed after use. Additionally, reusing uncontaminated water and selecting products with water-efficiency labels can help save on monthly bills.

On the topic of electrical safety, PETRA reminded the public to ensure home wiring is safe and to test Residual Current Devices (RCDs) regularly. Proper functioning of RCDs ensures immediate electricity supply cut-off in case of faults. Other safety measures include avoiding overloading sockets, using appliances with safety labels, and keeping hands dry when handling electrical equipment.

Fadillah concluded that by adopting efficient energy and water usage practices, the public can celebrate the festival more safely while supporting the nation's agenda for sustainable and resilient energy and water resources to meet future development needs.
