Kuala lumpur: Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States is actively pursuing peace in Ukraine through constructive dialogue with Russia. He emphasized President Donald Trump’s resolve to end the ongoing conflict, viewing wars as costly and wasteful in terms of both lives and resources. The US is determined to utilize every possible avenue to help conclude the war.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Rubio mentioned that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov introduced a new concept regarding Ukraine, which Rubio plans to discuss with President Trump. While this concept does not guarantee peace, it could potentially pave the way for a resolution. Rubio shared these insights following a meeting with Lavrov during the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
The meeting with Lavrov was characterized by Rubio as ‘productive, constructive, and frank.’ Concurrently, he highlighted the US’s commitment to bolstering strategic and economic ties in the Indo-Pacific region, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia.
Rubio described a recent trilateral meeting with Japan and the Philippines as ‘excellent,’ underscoring robust cooperation in maritime security, territorial integrity, and economic development. He emphasized ongoing collaboration with these nations and expressed anticipation for the upcoming visit of the President of the Philippines to Washington.
Rubio further highlighted the significance of Southeast Asia, noting that over 6,000 American companies have invested in the region due to its demographic youth and growth potential. He stated that the future of the 21st century will be shaped in the Indo-Pacific, especially Southeast Asia, and confirmed the US’s intention to expand its long-standing relationships in the area.
