Serdang: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has embarked on a freshwater crayfish farming project as part of efforts to enhance national food security and conserve aquatic ecosystems.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah stated that the initiative also aims to broaden students’ knowledge in aquaculture. The farming project involves the cultivation of freshwater crayfish, specifically blue crayfish, which is gaining attention in the aquaculture industry due to its fast growth rate, high nutritional value, and strong market potential.

Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah emphasized that the initiative aligns with UPM’s Food Security Blueprint, particularly in strengthening smart agriculture systems, ensuring food safety and development, and making aquatic resources more accessible to Malaysians. This statement was made during the officiation of the freshwater crayfish release event at the university’s Kolej Tan Sri Aishah Ghani (KTAG).
