Ungku Omar Polytechnic To Send Initial Ex-Kurung Report To KPT Tomorrow

Kuala Lumpur: Ungku Omar Polytechnic (PUO) director Dr. Shamsuri Abdullah announced that an initial report regarding the Ex-Kurung terror crisis management and handling exercise will be submitted to the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) tomorrow. This submission aims to provide an early explanation of the events that transpired.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Shamsuri indicated that while the comprehensive report might require more time, he has already reached out to Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, the political secretary to the Minister of Higher Education, to share preliminary information. “We have received various responses, both positive and some that are not happy because it is said to disrupt learning, injuries and so on. However, I think this matter can be alleviated when the community knows that this is a simulation or training,” Dr. Shamsuri noted at the conclusion of the Ex Kurung exercise, which spanned two days, ending today.

The exercise, as clarified by the police in a statement yesterday, was a simulated crisis management and handling operation known as Ex Kurung. Despite meticulous preparations, a student reportedly sustained minor injuries, prompting the Minister of Higher Education, Zambry, to await PUO’s full report.

Dr. Shamsuri emphasized that the focus will now be on the students who were ‘hostages’ during the simulation, as they were considered the most impacted. “Academic advisors will meet them and we will ensure that their health is not affected and guaranteed,” he assured.

Ex-Kurung involved over 200 participants, including 69 Special Operations Forces (PGK) commandos, Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) personnel, Ministry of Health (MOH) staff, media, and PUO management. The exercise simulated an attack by a group of terrorists, the detention of ‘hostages’ among students and lecturers, culminating in a tactical intervention and rescue operation that concluded around 5:30 this morning.
