UMNO Assembly Focuses on GE16 Preparations and Female Representation

Kuala lumpur: Preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16) were a central theme in the policy speeches delivered by the Women's, Youth, and Puteri wings at the UMNO General Assembly. The discussions centered on candidate selection, enhancing party machinery, engaging young voters, and formulating relevant policies.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wanita UMNO chief Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad emphasized the need for 30 percent female representation in leadership roles, starting within the party. Noraini, also the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, proposed that UMNO enshrine this target in the party constitution and establish a timeline to implement policies recognizing women's societal roles.

Noraini further advocated for UMNO to lead in drafting a Political Financing Act to promote transparency in the democratic system, with open disclosure of contributions to prevent slander. She underscored the importance of mastering both 'heartware' (empathy) and 'hardware' (technology) to win public trust ahead of GE16, noting the evolving nature of political battles involving perception and information.

Puteri UMNO chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi echoed Noraini's sentiments, highlighting the lack of female representation in the party's structure despite the 30 percent target. She stressed the need for equal opportunities for young female candidates, in line with UMNO's progressive tradition. Nurul Amal also pointed out challenges women face in the workplace, underlining the importance of female leadership for equitable opportunities.

UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called for urgent action to address the trust crisis at the grassroots level, noting a decline in the number of seats won in recent elections. He emphasized the necessity of regaining public trust, asserting that UMNO Youth will continue to provide feedback to ensure the party remains committed to defending religion, race, and the nation.
