Kota bharu: Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) is advancing its efforts to cultivate entrepreneurial skills among students by hosting the Endurance Horse Championship (UMK Cup) 2025, now a pivotal event in the university’s calendar.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, UMK Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof Dr Mohammad Ismail, highlighted the impressive turnout for the current championship, which featured 112 participants from various regions, including Terengganu and Kedah. This marked an increase from the 80 entries seen in the 2023 Sprint event.
The event, supported by several stakeholders such as Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, aims to equip students with the skills to manage large-scale events professionally, under the guidance of faculty and university staff. Prof Dr Mohammad Ismail emphasized that students take on roles as project directors, supported by experienced instructors, aligning with the vision of UMK Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Prof Dr Arham Abdullah, which includes extreme sports as a part of character development in the UMK30 plan.
He further elaborated that the championship provides students with entrepreneurial opportunities through stall sales, sponsorships, and potential income streams. Students are instructed to ensure the event is financially viable, focusing on cost management and securing sponsorships.
Prof Dr Mohammad Ismail reported that this year’s championship allowed students to generate income through sponsorships, both in cash and in-kind. Based on the positive response, the university intends to establish the UMK Cup as an annual hallmark event, recognizing its potential to promote a healthy lifestyle and enhance tourism in Kelantan. The university plans to expand the event in the future, aiming for a broader impact.
