Kuala Lampur:Umios Corporation, a leading global fishery and food company, is set to expand its operations in Malaysia by investing in both human and pet food sectors.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Umios has recently acquired a 51 percent stake in Malaysia's Pet World International Sdn Bhd for 11.4 billion Japanese yen. This acquisition, completed in September, marks a significant step in strengthening its presence in the Malaysian market.
Umios, previously known as Maruha Nichiro and headquartered in Tokyo, has a storied 145-year history in the fishing industry. The company is exploring further investments in Malaysia, contingent on the growth of its food and pet business, and potential requirements for new production facilities.
Looking ahead, Umios plans to introduce Japan-made jelly products to the Malaysian halal market next month. Manager Keisuke Enomoto emphasized Malaysia's appeal due to its growing population and income levels, identifying strong potential for food business expansion, leveraging Umios's expertise as a major seafood supplier.
In the fiscal year 2025, Umios reported revenue of 1.1 trillion Japanese yen. The company operates globally, with activities in the USA, South America, Europe, and Asia, encompassing fishing, food processing, fish farming, and the trading of seafood, meat, and poultry. Umios also maintains frozen seafood factories and food processing facilities in Thailand, Vietnam, China, the US, the UK, and the Netherlands.
