UiTM Outlines Structured Plan to Develop International-level Athletes

Kuala lumpur: Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) is committed to nurturing new talent among young athletes to continue Malaysia’s excellent achievements on the international sporting stage, says its Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib Sahibuddin. He stated that the institution has implemented a structured athlete development system that includes talent identification, guidance, early exposure, and special admission pathways for promising athletes.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, UiTM continuously identifies sporting talent at each campus before selected athletes are provided with proper guidance, structured training, and mentoring to ensure their potential is fully developed. Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin emphasized the importance of supporting athletes even after they complete their studies, ensuring they can continue contributing to the country’s sporting success.

He shared these insights during the SEA Games Athletes Gathering with the UiTM Vice-Chancellor at UiTM Shah Alam. At the event, he met with 44 UiTM athletes, including 19 men and 25 women, who are set to represent Malaysia at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand from December 9 to 20.

As a gesture of support, Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin presented financial assistance to the athletes, highlighting the university’s commitment to safeguarding their welfare throughout their preparations and responsibilities in representing the country. He also mentioned that athletes who succeed in winning medals will be granted a tuition fee waiver throughout their studies, aligning with the university’s existing policy.

UiTM athletes will participate in various sporting disciplines at the upcoming SEA Games, including archery, rugby, weightlifting, sailing, canoeing, handball, dragon boat, cycling, hockey, futsal, netball, karate, baseball, softball, petanque, woodball, and kayaking.
