Dili: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim concluded his two-day official visit to Timor-Leste, highlighting the warm reception and recognition it signifies for Malaysia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that this visit, as part of Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair, aligns with the tradition of engaging with all member states before the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
With Timor-Leste on the brink of becoming ASEAN’s 11th member, Anwar underscored the strong personal and governmental relationships with Timor-Leste’s President Jos© Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao. This rapport is expected to enhance cooperation in several key areas such as defence, digital communications, connectivity, investment, and trade.
Anwar reflected on Malaysia’s historical support for Timor-Leste, including the deployment of defence personnel prior to its independence. He acknowledged former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s visit in 2003 as a significant gesture of support. The Prime Minister reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to assist Timor-Leste through various educational and defence initiatives.
Additionally, Anwar noted Petronas’s approved exploration operations in Timor-Leste and the expansion of Batik Air’s services, which have been positively received. On the ASEAN front, Anwar mentioned Malaysia’s dedication to regional stability as the chairmanship transitions to the Philippines next year, while closely monitoring Thailand and Cambodia’s political developments.
Addressing the situation in Myanmar, Anwar reported a reduction in hostilities, stressing the importance of inclusive elections. He also highlighted ASEAN’s energy transition and digital connectivity goals, ensuring that Timor-Leste remains integrated in these developments.
Anwar strongly criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza, particularly against humanitarian aid missions, advocating for the delivery of essential supplies. The visit included witnessing the signing of MoUs between the Central Bank of Timor-Leste and various Asian institutes, launching a development project at Dili Port, and receiving the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste.
The Malaysian delegation departed for Kuala Lumpur with a send-off by Timor-Leste’s President and Prime Minister, marking the end of a mutually beneficial visit.
