Port Dickson:Negeri Sembilan: The number of turtle nests recorded in Negeri Sembilan has increased more than threefold, rising from 13 nests in 2020 to 45 nests in 2025. This increase involves both green turtles and hawksbill turtles, particularly in Port Dickson.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Fisheries Department director Kasim Tawe highlighted that the increase indicates continued turtle landings at several beach locations in the state, including Port Dickson. He mentioned that turtle nesting is not limited to Tanjung Gemuk but extends across many beaches in Port Dickson, from Tanjung Tuan to Tanjung Gemuk.
Kasim also reported an increase in both the number of eggs recorded and the successful hatching rate over the past five years. In 2025, a total of 5,552 eggs were recorded, with 4,371 successfully hatching, compared to 3,333 eggs recorded and 1,080 hatching the previous year.
Addressing a proposal by the non-governmental organization Aktivis Pemuliharaan Marin Malaysia, which suggested designating Tanjung Gemuk as a turtle landing protection zone, Kasim stated there is no need for such a designation since the beach serves various public functions. Instead, he emphasized the importance of raising public awareness to maintain beach cleanliness and minimize disturbances to nesting turtles.
Pantai Tanjung Gemuk is a public beach managed by the Port Dickson Municipal Council (MPPD), responsible for its cleanliness and providing basic facilities. The Fisheries Department has also appointed Glory Beach Resort, located nearby, as a private turtle conservation center in Port Dickson.
Kasim underscored the necessity of cooperation from all parties, including MPPD, the Port Dickson District and Land Office, and the public, to protect the turtle landing area effectively. The NGO has previously stressed the significance of Tanjung Gemuk as a turtle landing and nesting site, advocating for a more organized protection strategy in light of a recent incident where a hawksbill turtle nest was reportedly disturbed, and eggs were stolen.
