Kuala Lumpur: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has paid tribute to Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, describing him as a leader who prioritized the nation’s interests above all else.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tun Dr Mahathir recalled their long-standing relationship, which began with a meeting at a supermarket in 1968, long before Tun Abdullah’s premiership. The former prime minister shared these reflections after paying his respects to the late leader during the lying-in-state at Masjid Negara.
Tun Dr Mahathir highlighted Tun Abdullah’s achievements after succeeding him as the 5th Prime Minister of Malaysia. He noted the historic victory in the 2004 General Election, where Tun Abdullah led Barisan Nasional to win nearly 90 percent of the vote, a testament to his leadership.
Despite facing challenges during his tenure, Tun Abdullah chose to step down following a less favorable outcome in the 2008 General Election. Dr Mahathir praised Tun Abdullah for his graceful transition of power to Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, emphasizing the tradition of peaceful leadership transitions in Malaysia.
Dr Mahathir expressed deep respect for Tun Abdullah’s legacy of wise and dignified leadership, which he believed contributed to the country’s stability and harmony. He extended condolences to Tun Abdullah’s family, offering words of strength during this period of mourning.
Tun Abdullah passed away at the National Heart Institute and will be laid to rest with full state funeral honors at the Heroes’ Mausoleum after Zohor prayers.
