Kuala lumpur: US President Donald Trump is demanding the immediate resignation of Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan after accusations from a US senator regarding Tan’s alleged ties to China, as reported by the German Press Agency (dpa).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lip-Bu Tan, who was appointed as Intel’s chief executive in March following a lengthy search, is facing scrutiny from Republican Senator Tom Cotton. Cotton claims that under Tan’s leadership at Cadence, the company illegally sold products to a military university in China and transferred technology to a Chinese firm. Additionally, reports suggest that Tan has control over numerous companies in China.
Senator Cotton requested a response from Intel’s board of directors by mid-August and has since gained support from President Trump. Trump took to his Truth Social platform, stating that Tan is “highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately.” He emphasized that there is no alternative solution to the issue.
Intel, once a leader in the chip industry, has faced challenges in recent years. The company aimed to leverage its success in the PC sector to gain a foothold in the mobile device market, but it struggled against competitors with more energy-efficient processors. Smartphone chips are predominantly sourced from Intel’s rivals, such as Qualcomm and TSMC, while Nvidia maintains a strong lead in AI chip systems.
