Traveller Scheme Set for Cabinet Review to Safeguard Malaysian Commuters

Kuala lumpur: The Traveller Scheme, designed to offer protection to Malaysians commuting for work across borders, is on the verge of being presented at an upcoming Cabinet meeting for evaluation, as announced by Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. The scheme is anticipated to be rolled out in the second quarter of this year, marking a significant step towards safeguarding the welfare of approximately 400,000 Malaysian workers who travel to Singapore.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Ramanan highlighted that the initiative is nearing the completion of its study phase. He stressed the importance of the scheme, noting that the commuters currently lack a protection system, leaving them and their families vulnerable in case of workplace or commuting incidents. "They are Malaysians, and as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stated, no one will be left behind," he emphasized during a press interaction following the Ministry of Human Resources' (KESUMA) Monthly Assembly and Breaking of Fast Ceremony.

Present at the event were Deputy Minister Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan and SOCSO Group CEO Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed. Further discussions are set to take place, with Mohammed Azman announcing plans for SOCSO to engage with stakeholders, including NGOs that collaborate with the commuting workers. These discussions are scheduled for April 6 at the Malaysian Embassy in Singapore, aiming to refine the scheme's implementation.
