Kuala lumpur: The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) Kedah and the Trang Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Thailand have organised a business matching and networking programme aimed at enhancing the cross-border economy, particularly focusing on the tourism and halal industries.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, DPMM Kedah adviser Zuhaizar Abdul Karim emphasized that the initiative could address 'common challenges' faced by both regions, which serve as transit points but fail to capture potential economic benefits from tourism. He noted that Malaysian tourists traveling to destinations like Phuket and Krabi often bypass Trang due to misconceptions about the lack of attractions and limited availability of halal food. Similarly, tourists from Thailand and foreigners renewing visas frequently pass through Kedah en route to Penang and Kuala Lumpur without stopping.

Zuhaizar highlighted the recent courtesy visit by Trang Deputy Governor Anan Boon Samran and a delegation of 22 entrepreneurs from diverse sectors, aimed at tackling these challenges. He stated that the collaboration could lead to discussions and potential partnerships, with a reciprocal visit by DPMM Kedah to Trang already on the agenda. Zuhaizar also expressed a desire for DPMM Kedah members to explore exporting their products and services, with Thailand being the nearest market. He sees Trang as a potential platform for expanding business opportunities, particularly in the halal food industry.

Trang Deputy Governor Anan Boon emphasized that the delegation's visit was part of an effort to raise awareness of Trang Province as a tourist destination. He pointed out that Trang is more affordable compared to other tourist hotspots and offers halal food and industries, along with diverse religious and cultural attractions that could draw tourists from Kedah and beyond.
