Trainee Doctor’s Death Prompts Investigation into Bullying at Kelantan Hospital

Kuala krai: The Ministry of Health (MOH) will not compromise if investigations into the death of a female trainee doctor at Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital (HSIP) reveal elements of bullying, according to Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. The Kelantan State Health Department is conducting an internal investigation alongside a police probe to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad emphasized the need for comprehensive information before drawing conclusions about the potential involvement of bullying in the trainee doctor's death. He made these remarks during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Negara in response to Senator Mohd Hasbie Muda's inquiry about the case. The trainee doctor was found dead in a room at the hospital last Friday.

In addressing concerns about a possible culture of bullying among trainee doctors, Dr Dzulkefly stated that hospital directors and department heads have been instructed to take immediate action against any toxic practices. He highlighted the importance of creating a fair, harmonious, and respectful working environment for all healthcare staff, including house officers, medical officers, and nurses.

Dr Dzulkefly further noted that every complaint must be investigated promptly without shielding any individual. He referenced existing service circulars from the Public Service Department (JPA) that prohibit abusive language, swearing, and open insults among civil servants, including healthcare workers.
