Kuala Lumpur: The Communications Ministry is gearing up to introduce a series of ‘Train the Trainers’ sessions as part of the Online Safety Campaign, aiming to roll them out before Aidilfitri. This strategic move is designed to expedite the campaign’s implementation, with a particular focus on combating online crimes such as the dissemination of fake news and incitement.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil highlighted that this initiative aligns with the decree from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim during the First Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament on February 3. His Majesty urged the government to take decisive action against slander and online incitement that could foster division within society. Fahmi emphasized the ministry’s goal this year to engage with 10,000 schools and all public universities through this campaign, underscoring the importance of creating a safer internet environment for everyone.
The ministry announced the launch of the Online Safety Campaign Roadshow yesterday, which aims to boost internet safety awareness across all societal segments. A significant aspect of the campaign is to restrict children under the age of 13 from owning social media accounts, ensuring that internet usage is monitored by parents or guardians. The campaign also seeks to educate the public on avoiding online scams, cyberbullying, online gambling, and crimes related to pedophilia, while promoting responsible and ethical internet use.
Fahmi reiterated the ministry’s dedication to providing optimal internet access for Malaysians without sacrificing safety. He noted that amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 are part of the government’s strategy to enhance online security in light of evolving digital threats. Fahmi acknowledged the challenges faced by agencies like the Royal Malaysia Police in identifying and combating the migration of criminals to social media platforms, stressing that technological advancements and high-speed internet are futile if a safe digital environment cannot be ensured.
