Toshiba Unveils SiC MOSFET Gate Driver Photocoupler for Industrial Use with Advanced Safety Features

Tokyo: Toshiba Electronic Devices and Storage Corporation (“Toshiba”) has announced the launch of its new gate driver photocoupler, the ‘TLP5814H.’ This device is designed with an output capacity of +6.8A/-4.8A and is packaged in a compact SO8L size. It includes an active Miller clamp function specifically for driving silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs. Toshiba has commenced volume shipments of this new product today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the TLP5814H is engineered for applications in circuits like inverters, where MOSFETs or IGBTs are used in a series configuration. In these circuits, a Miller current can generate gate voltage when the lower arm is turned off, potentially leading to malfunctions such as short circuits in both the upper and lower arms. To counteract this, a common protective measure involves applying a negative voltage to the gate during the off state.

The introduction of TLP5814H aims to enhance the safety and reliability of industrial equipment by preventing such malfunctions, contributing to the broader adoption of SiC technology in various applications.
