Kuala lumpur: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has delivered 4.3 gigawatts (GW) of installed renewable energy capacity as the utility continues to support the country's energy transition agenda. TNB chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid stated that the company is committed to advancing the nation's transition towards a low-carbon future through investments in renewable energy, grid modernisation, and regional power connectivity initiatives.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abdul Razak highlighted that TNB's contribution of 4.3 GW accounts for more than a third of the country's total renewable energy capacity. He shared these insights during the launch of the Energy Transition Conference 2026 (ETCon26), which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and attended by Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad.
Abdul Razak expressed TNB's support for the government's commitment of RM43 billion under the Regulatory Period 4 to modernise the national grid. He described this investment as a vital enabler for Malaysia's clean energy transition, aiming to upgrade infrastructure and accelerate the shift to clean energy systems, including facilities to support the increasing demand of data centres.
Furthermore, he announced two significant solar projects revealed during the conference, which include a 785-megawatt peak (MWp) hybrid hydro-floating solar project and a 750-MWp ground-mounted solar project. These initiatives are expected to further bolster Malaysia's clean energy goals and achieve 70 percent renewable energy capacity by 2050 or earlier.
On regional energy integration, Abdul Razak noted the success of the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), which doubled its electricity trading capacity from 100 megawatts (MW) to 200 MW earlier this year. TNB is also involved in expanding regional connectivity through projects such as the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore interconnection, the proposed second Malaysia-Singapore electricity link, and the Sarawak-Peninsular Malaysia interconnection.
He also mentioned that TNB subsidiary GSPARX has achieved 224 MW of installed solar capacity, which indicates the growing adoption of rooftop solar systems across various sectors.
Abdul Razak addressed the challenges posed by global geopolitical events on energy supply and demand, emphasizing the importance of securing a reliable and affordable energy system while progressing towards a low-carbon future. ETCon26, held from June 3-5, 2026, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, serves as a flagship conference by TNB to bring together global stakeholders to further the national energy transition agenda. Themed 'Energy and AI: The Synergy for Energy Transition,' the conference focuses on the interplay between energy systems and digital technologies.
