Kuala lumpur: Spanning 80 years of its establishment, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) continues to strengthen its role as a driver of national development, particularly in ensuring that technology access and digital networks are fully utilised by all Malaysians.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, TM Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Amar Huzaimi Md Deris said this commitment goes beyond expanding the telecommunications network nationwide; it also encompasses building the people's capabilities so that technology can be used to improve living standards, education, and the economy.
"We at TM are very passionate about expanding our network and our access nationwide so that all citizens can benefit from or stay close to the technology we bring, which is why we invest heavily in expanding our network across the country. But is that enough? Not really, because even with a nationwide network, if the way it is used falls short, then that is not good. Therefore, we also constantly provide encouragement and enlightenment on how this energy or technology can be fully utilised by the entire nation or the rakyat to transform their lifestyles for the better," he told the media in conjunction with TM's 80th Anniversary celebration here today.
Amar Huzaimi said TM is also implementing various digital outreach initiatives to ensure that technology can benefit communities in rural areas and remote locations, including islands. Among the key focus is TM's Digital Outreach programme in Pulau Tioman, which brings technological access to the local community while exposing students to technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and programming.
He said this effort is in line with TM's aspiration to ensure that no citizen is left behind in the current of digital transformation, while opening up opportunities for society to create new prospects through technology. In facing the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0), Amar Huzaimi said TM views the company's role as increasingly vital in ensuring Malaysia has the capability to remain competitive and relevant through the adoption of AI, digitalisation, and robotics.
"If we look back, previously, our era was simple. There were telegraphs and telephones. But the challenge, as we look at the industrial revolution, is that it is moving faster. So now, IR4.0 is where the approach of AI, digital, and robotics all become fundamental factors. And this is where TM plays a very important role where we not only grow rapidly with the technology out there and bring that technology into our country, but we also ensure that the nation has the capability to drive us forward. Thus, we produce the latest technology and suitable platforms so that our country remains competitive and relevant to drive a more inclusive future for all Malaysians," he stated.
Meanwhile, Amar Huzaimi said that in conjunction with its 80th anniversary, TM has produced a short film titled "Gema Malaysia" (Echo of Malaysia) for the first time, highlighting the company's journey alongside the people and the nation over the past eight decades. He added that the film also highlights TM's role in critical moments of the nation's history, including when the proclamation of independence by the first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, was broadcast to the people nationwide through communication networks.
"Therefore, I invite all of you to watch the short film which motivates us, giving us the spirit to continue generating innovations not just for the company, but also for the betterment of the rakyat and our country here," he said. The short film "Gema Malaysia" was premiered for the first time to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a screening at today's event. The film is scheduled to be officially broadcast starting tonight via social media, mass media, and YouTube.
Meanwhile, TM Chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Putih said in a statement that although technology constantly changes throughout its eight decades of operation, the company's responsibility remains steadfast: a commitment to connecting the people and the nation. "For TM, this responsibility goes beyond merely providing networks. It means creating opportunities, bridging Malaysia's connection with the world, and building pathways that link the present with the future. As a globally recognised national digital leader, we set world-class standards in every endeavour undertaken because Malaysia deserves the best. This spirit has been the core of our commitment over the past eight decades, and today we continue to drive the same vision toward a more inclusive future," he said.
