Kuala lumpur: With just two days to go before Malaysians celebrate National Day, the festive atmosphere is palpable, with the Jalur Gemilang adorning various locations and patriotic songs once again playing energetically on the radio, in offices, and at celebration venues. From Tanggal 31 Ogos, Warisan, Setia, Bahtera Merdeka, and Saya Anak Malaysia to Jalur Gemilang, these compositions, some of which were produced decades ago, remain among the top choices whenever Aug 31 approaches, evoking a deep sense of pride and patriotism.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, despite the enduring appeal of these timeless classics, Malaysia has never lacked patriotic songs. In fact, new compositions are produced every year in conjunction with National Day celebrations, including Aku Berjanji, written and performed by Faizal Tahir, which serves as the theme song for this year's celebration. Renowned local composer Datuk Mokhzani Ismail commented on the rich history of Malaysia's patriotic music, noting that the country has produced hundreds of such songs since the 1950s. He highlighted the significance of National Day theme songs, first introduced in 1970, and their role in the nation's vast repertoire of patriotic music.

Amid hundreds of patriotic songs spanning different eras, genres, and musical styles, earlier works continue to hold a unique appeal. Not only do they remain popular with listeners, but some have also been revitalized through re-recordings by singers from subsequent generations. For instance, Perajurit Tanah Air, better known as Inilah Barisan Kita, which was introduced in the 1960s by the late Jamaludin Alias, was later performed by Aris and Angie, while Tanggal 31 Ogos, originally sung by Ahmad CB, was re-recorded by the late Datuk Sudirman Haji Arshad.

While a few patriotic songs from the current generation like Gemuruh, Negaraku, and Cinta Negara have achieved considerable influence, Mokhzani believes that the enduring popularity of older compositions is largely driven by nostalgia, frequent airplay, and the strength of their melodies and lyrics. Having served as chairman of the Merdeka Songs committee since 1996, he noted that tracks such as Tanggal 31 Ogos and others have effectively become the 'soundtrack' of Merdeka for multiple generations.

Mokhzani also pointed out the challenge faced by newer songs, which often lack the prolonged exposure needed to become ingrained in the nation's collective memory. He emphasized the importance of frequent airplay in helping new songs gain acceptance, while acknowledging the seasonal nature of National Day theme songs as a barrier to their long-term popularity.

Renowned local lyricist Datuk Habsah Hassan advocates for a more comprehensive effort to popularize patriotic songs, suggesting that private broadcasters and commercial establishments should play a role in featuring these songs year-round. She believes that such efforts could lead to increased familiarity and acceptance, ultimately encouraging the younger generation to engage with these important cultural works.
