Johor bahru: Five individuals, including three Singaporeans, were issued compound notices in Johor Bahru for littering in public places, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nga received the latest information from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), which has been conducting inspections in the state following the enforcement of the Community Service Order under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) on January 1.
Nga remarked that the enforcement serves as a lesson for those who believed littering could be carried out with impunity. He emphasized the goal of maintaining cleanliness in Malaysia and even surpassing Singapore's standards. During the 2025 Local Government Department Touch of Success Ceremony at the Sungai Jarom Public Market, Nga highlighted that on New Year's Eve, 120 individuals in the federal capital received compound notices for littering, with further legal action anticipated.
When questioned about the enforcement in states not subject to Act 672, including Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Selangor, Nga clarified that local authorities would handle the enforcement. The Community Service Order under Act 672, effective January 1, 2026, aims to tackle littering in public spaces.
The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) previously announced that the Community Service Order would be implemented in several states and Federal Territories, while awaiting approval from other state authorities for enforcement. The punishment follows amendments to Act 672, passed by Parliament last year.
Additionally, Nga revealed plans to develop ten markets nationwide as pilot tourism destinations and community landmarks, with a budget exceeding RM10 million. An open design competition, judged by independent parties, will determine the design concept for each market, with collaboration between local authorities and the Malaysian Institute of Architects.
Nga also addressed the Urban Renewal Bill, confirming its progression according to Parliament's schedule. The KPKT has gathered feedback on the bill and is prepared for its tabling, respecting the agenda set by Parliament.
