Kuching: Three Indonesian men aged in their mid-30s were arrested in a raid on a premises in Kuching yesterday for suspected involvement in the smuggling and distribution of uncustomed alcoholic beverages in Sarawak. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said a total of 76,367 cartons of 1602 Life Beer Smooth Lager were seized in the Op Taring Alpha 2 operation. He stated that the 2.15 pm raid was carried out by officers and personnel from the Wildlife Crime Bureau / Special Intelligence Investigation (WCB/PSK) of Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department, with assistance from the Padawan District Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Division and the Padawan Municipal Council. An inspection at the location led to the seizure of alcoholic beverages branded '1602 Life Beer' stored in the premises and in three containers. Two Toyota forklifts along with keys were also seized. Mohd Yusri said the case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for the offence of possessing or storing any uncustomed or prohibited goods. He emphasized the operation as part of the police's ongoing commitment to strengthen enforcement against smuggling and uncustomed goods. Such enforcement not only curbs revenue leakage to the state but also prevents cross-border crime and threats to public safety and order. Mohd Yusri stressed that the police would not compromise with any parties involved in the smuggling of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages, diversion of controlled and subsidised goods, or any form of violations that affected national interests and public well-being. From Jan 1 to date, the WCB/PSK under Bukit Aman has conducted 199 raids nationwide, resulting in the arrest of 374 individuals for various offences. The cases involved smuggling of uncustomed goods, leakage of controlled and subsidised items, wildlife smuggling, and e-waste operations, with total seizures estimated at RM 258,518,030.51. The police will continue to intensify intelligence gathering, monitoring, and integrated enforcement operations to curb smuggling activities and organised crime more effectively.
