Melaka:Thailand, Brunei, and Cambodia have shown interest in joining Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore in efforts to address online safety issues concerning children, according to Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi welcomed this development, highlighting it as a sign of ASEAN's united direction. He emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that Southeast Asia would be stronger and more effective in dealing with major social media platforms if acting in solidarity.
Fahmi mentioned that discussions with his counterparts from Indonesia and Singapore have aligned on this matter. He expressed optimism that a united ASEAN front would significantly impact social media platforms, which view the region as a single market. He believes that addressing common issues collectively will lead to more effective solutions.
The minister spoke after attending the Safe Internet Campaign Programme at Multimedia University (MMU), Melaka Campus. He noted that Malaysia is learning from international examples, such as Australia's restrictions and recent cases in the United States, to enhance their strategies.
Fahmi was previously reported discussing Malaysia and Indonesia's agreement to establish inter-agency cooperation at the implementation level, with Singapore's involvement also planned. He also highlighted the Safe Internet Campaign's success in reaching schools across Malaysia, with ongoing content enhancements by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
