Kubang kerian: The success of peace talks and a ceasefire in the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict is the result of the collective efforts of various parties, including ASEAN leadership, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that the achievement was also due to the commitment and work of Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and the active role of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) Chief Gen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar. Anwar highlighted the MAF Chief’s immediate engagement, flying directly to Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and the border to discuss with responsible generals, demonstrating a collaborative approach rather than an individual effort.
Anwar further mentioned his participation alongside the Foreign Minister, who engaged with the foreign ministers of the involved countries, and generals who communicated with their counterparts. This multifaceted approach facilitated the rapid realization of this peace negotiation.
The success of the peace talks also garnered international attention, with United States President Donald Trump reaching out to express gratitude. Anwar conveyed to Trump that the peace deal was a product of cooperation among ASEAN leaders and the governments of Thailand and Cambodia.
Last Wednesday, Thailand and Cambodia reaffirmed their commitment to the ceasefire reached on July 28 along their shared border. Both nations agreed to maintain current troop positions and avoid increasing military strength, as decided during the Extraordinary Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) in Kuala Lumpur. This meeting was co-chaired by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Gen Tea Seiha and Thailand’s Acting Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Narphanit.
On July 28, a ceasefire agreement was put in place following escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, which began on May 28 after a clash in the disputed Preah Vihear area resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. The ceasefire was agreed upon during a special meeting chaired by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya.
