Thai-Cambodia Conflict: I Just Focused On The Solution, Says PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today clarified that his sole focus in the recent Thai-Cambodian conflict was on finding a peaceful resolution to ensure ASEAN’s continued stability and security. The Prime Minister firmly dismissed the claim that there was external pressure from global powers, reaffirming that the major breakthrough came through direct regional diplomacy.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized his approach during a meeting with the Association of Malaysian Indonesian Journalists (ISWAMI) and chief editors of major Indonesian media outlets. He stated, ‘I just focused on the solution. That’s what I conveyed to both China and the United States.’

Anwar detailed his direct involvement by explaining that he personally contacted both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on July 24. This intervention led to a temporary ceasefire between the two nations. However, he noted that despite the initial success, the conflict resumed the following day, July 25, as troops required more time to withdraw.

Responding to speculations, Anwar refuted claims that the ceasefire was influenced by pressure from United States President Donald Trump, allegedly linked to tariff threats against Cambodia and Thailand.

The agreement for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire was reached during a special meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The meeting was chaired by Anwar and attended by both Hun Manet and Phumtham, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for the region.

The meeting and its outcomes received widespread international media coverage, including in Indonesia. Many outlets commended Anwar’s pivotal role in facilitating the landmark ceasefire, thus reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a constructive force in regional diplomacy.
