Telco Service Providers Ordered to Enhance Internet Along Major Roads

Kuala lumpur: All telecommunications service providers have been directed to improve the quality of internet networks along major roads in the country, as announced by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. This initiative aligns with the policy ‘where there’s a road, there is internet,’ which emphasizes ensuring internet coverage is available along roads, including highways.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified four locations from Tawau to Sapagaya that are experiencing internet issues. Fahmi instructed telecommunications companies to enhance the internet network quality on these main roads. He urged companies to collaborate, with one company hosting the infrastructure while others ensure internet access.

Fahmi made these remarks during a MADANI Community engagement program in Kampung Cocos, attended by Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Information director-general Julina Johan. He also mentioned that internet coverage in populated areas is projected to reach 98.6 percent upon completing Phase One of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) this year.

To achieve full internet coverage in populated areas, Fahmi highlighted the need for diverse technologies beyond traditional towers due to high costs and logistical challenges. He expressed optimism that 100 percent coverage could be achieved within a few years.

Regarding the Kampung Sapagaya telecommunications tower, Fahmi noted the necessity of additional batteries to maintain internet stability during power outages, which residents have reported occurring frequently.
