Kuala lumpur: National badminton legend Datuk Rashid Sidek believes Malaysia can regain the Thomas Cup if they display strong team spirit, as the prestigious tournament demands more than just individual performances.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Rashid emphasized that team spirit and trust among players could inspire the team to rise above expectations and spring upsets in a major competition like the Thomas Cup. He highlighted the unpredictable nature of team tournaments, noting that sometimes teams regarded as weak go on to win, while stronger teams falter. Citing India as an example, Rashid pointed out their unexpected triumph as Thomas Cup champions, underscoring the importance of team spirit alongside athlete performance.
When questioned about Malaysia's chances of ending a 34-year title drought in the Thomas Cup, Rashid expressed optimism, recalling his own experience as part of the squad that defeated Indonesia 3-2 in the thrilling 1992 Thomas Cup final in Kuala Lumpur. He urged continuous support and encouragement for the national badminton squad, emphasizing Malaysia's potential and strengths. Rashid also reiterated the importance of belief in the team, noting that those selected are players who regularly compete in monthly tournaments.
The upcoming 2026 Thomas Cup is set to be held in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3.
