Tawau: The Sabah government has directed the relevant agencies to mobilise all available assets and manpower to expedite rescue and relief operations for residents affected by floods in Tawau and surrounding areas. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor emphasized that the state government's priority is to ensure the safety of the people and provide immediate assistance and basic necessities to all victims.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hajiji expressed his sympathy for the victims affected by the floods impacting Tawau and nearby regions. He has instructed agencies to mobilise assets and manpower for rescue operations, victim evacuation, and the management of temporary relief centres (PPS) as well as to ensure the distribution of aid to those impacted.

Hajiji also urged residents in high-risk and affected areas to remain vigilant, comply with authority instructions, and evacuate promptly if directed for their safety and their families. He expressed hope for the situation to normalize soon and prayed for the well-being of victims and the safety of rescue teams.

Meanwhile, the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat announced that a PPS has been established at the Tawau Sports Complex Multipurpose Hall to accommodate flood victims. The PPS was activated at 11am, with the registration process for affected residents currently underway.

In a separate statement, Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Jemishin Ujin reported that 11 victims, including two children, were rescued from floods at Kampung Terasing Batu 17 by a department team. The victims were transported to safety using boats. The Tawau team is also conducting monitoring and rescue operations at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Apas Balung, another flood-affected area.

Earlier in the day, Tawau District Disaster Management Committee chairman Mohd Shoffian Mohd Said declared a flood disaster in the district effective 8.30 am after receiving situational reports and field information.
