Sibu: The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Sarawak branch is encouraging entrepreneurs at FAMA-organised Ramadan bazaars to donate surplus food to those in need. State FAMA director Norsalawaty Abdul Kadir stated that the initiative is designed to minimise food waste while supporting the less fortunate.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Norsalawaty highlighted that previous records show the Ramadan bazaars organised by FAMA have achieved zero waste management, ensuring no food is wasted. To further this effort, entrepreneurs are encouraged to set up designated donation areas for the underprivileged. Additionally, state FAMA plans to organise various food surplus programmes.
Norsalawaty added that state FAMA is hosting Ramadan bazaars at two locations: Medan Niaga Satok and Permai Sibu Farmers’ Market, with a target of RM2.5 million in sales and an estimated 80,000 visitors. The bazaars are themed ‘Mensia Marek’ (a long time ago), with the Medan Niaga Satok site featuring 72 lots, each offering a unique selection of food, avoiding overlapping varieties.
She noted that this year’s theme embraces a traditional concept, featuring dishes such as sotong tutok and kuih bongkol, among others. Visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase fresh produce from the market.
