Kuala Lumpur: Sunway Malls is set to expand its footprint with the opening of its 10th retail property, Sunway Square Mall, scheduled for September this year.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sunway Malls Chief Executive Officer HC Chan stated that Sunway Square Mall is envisioned as a lifestyle hub rather than a traditional shopping mall, combining elements of leisure, food, entertainment, and education. “We will have a dance academy, cinemas, a 24-hour bookstore called The Library, and an additional one million square feet of office space to cater to the 60,000 to 70,000 tertiary students and young professionals in the area,” he told a press conference at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre here today.
Chan emphasized that the mall supports the broader vision of Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah in establishing Sunway City Kuala Lumpur as a vibrant ecosystem of educational excellence, lifestyle integration, and community engagement. Spanning 300,000 square feet of net lettable area (NLA) across four floors, Sunway Square Mall will emphasize leisure and entertainment as key attractions. Anchor tenants include Village Grocer, BUMP Bouldering, TGV Cinemas, The Library by BookXcess, COUNT, KKV, Tutu Toe Dance Academy, and GoFit.
Located in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, the mall will feature over 150 retail outlets and 3,000 integrated parking bays, aiming to serve the surrounding office workers, students, and residential communities. Sunway Square is part of a larger integrated development featuring twin commercial towers, a 1,200-seat performing arts centre, a 24-hour library overlooking Sunway South Quay lake, and an additional one million square feet of office space, all of which will further boost foot traffic into Bandar Sunway.
“As of now, 95 per cent of Sunway Square Mall has been successfully leased, with the remaining five per cent reserved for brands that can offer the best and most engaging experiences for consumers, enhancing the overall shopping and lifestyle experience at the mall,” Chan said.
Looking ahead, the group plans to open two more malls by 2027 — Sunway Pier in Port Klang with 400,000 square feet of retail space, and Sunway Ipoh Mall in Sunway City Ipoh with 1.2 million square feet. An additional RM3 billion mixed-use development near the Bukit Chagar RTS Link station in Johor Bahru, featuring a 400,000 square-foot retail component, is expected by 2028. With these expansions, Sunway Malls projects a portfolio of 13 malls encompassing 8.2 million square feet of NLA, supported by future Sunway REIT acquisitions.
