JASIN: A proposal to construct a flood mitigation project at Sungai Rambai will be submitted to the Melaka state government as a measure to overcome flooding in the area, Sungai Rambai assemblyman Siti Faizah Abd Azis. She emphasized the need for a long-term solution as several areas are prone to floods, particularly the low-lying regions and those near the river.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, discussions have been held with related departments and agencies, including local authorities and the district and land office, to determine the measures that can be implemented. These discussions aim to present the proposal to the state government and subsequently to the federal government. Siti Faizah highlighted the necessity of building the flood mitigation project, noting that similar projects have been completed in Merlimau and Jasin. She stressed that it is now time for such a project in Sungai Rambai, given the presence of Sungai Kesang.

The state government has already implemented various measures to comb
at flooding, such as upgrading the drainage and irrigation systems, replacing water pumps, and constructing bunds in the Sungai Rambai state constituency. Siti Faizah mentioned that over the past three years, these efforts have had a positive impact, reducing flooding in hotspot areas over the course of a year.

Meanwhile, flood evacuee Nur Hidayu Buami, 41, shared her experience of being at the relief center since noon the previous day after her house in Kampung Janda Berhias was flooded due to continuous rain. She noted that while she had not faced flooding issues for almost two years, the heavy rains this week led to water entering her home. Nur Hidayu explained that her family, having frequently evacuated in the past, rarely experiences flooding now due to efforts like water pumping and drainage upgrades. However, the recent relentless rain prompted them to prepare by moving items to higher ground.
