Students Wear Extremist Outfits as Part of UiTM Academic Assignment

Kuala Lumpur: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has clarified that a viral video showing students from its Dengkil campus wearing costumes associated with an extremist group was part of an academic assignment presentation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the university’s vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin, explained that the presentation was for the Contemporary Global and Legal Issues course. This course is designed to instil critical thinking and raise awareness among students about human rights issues at the international level.

Prof Shahrin elaborated that during the session, students chose to address issues related to racial discrimination and hatred based on skin color, which are among the human rights violations that have occurred in several countries. The costumes and visual elements used were intended to enhance understanding and appreciation of the topics presented, offering a broader perspective from both historical and global viewpoints.

He emphasized that the visual approach was part of a pedagogical method aimed at supporting high-impact delivery in the classroom. This approach aligns with the course objectives of promoting analytical thinking and civic awareness among students.

The vice-chancellor assured that the lecturers and faculty involved ensured the presentation was conducted in a controlled setting and adhered to academic principles, without infringing on any religious, cultural, or racial sensitivities. He stated that no elements of insult towards any religion were mentioned or discussed throughout the session.

Prof Shahrin expressed hope that this explanation would clarify the situation and put an end to the misinterpretation of the assignment. He reiterated that UiTM is committed to empowering students’ learning experiences holistically and comprehensively.

Furthermore, Shahrin emphasized that UiTM consistently upholds the values of tolerance, respect, and intercultural sensitivity in all its academic and co-curricular activities. He affirmed the institution’s dedication to a responsible and ethical educational approach, centered on fostering critical thinking to produce a generation of students who are mature and sensitive to global issues.
