Dungun: An Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Bukit Besi branch student, Amirul Danish Zamri, tragically drowned at the Tasik Puteri Waterfall in Bukit Besi near here. The incident occurred around 11:10 am when the 19-year-old, who did not know how to swim, is believed to have slipped before disappearing into the depths of the lake.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amirul Danish was with nine friends at the scene who attempted to rescue him but to no avail. Nor Ahmad Anas Muiz Norazeli, a friend and fellow student, recounted that Amirul was standing in water about one meter deep before he unexpectedly slipped into a deeper area. Despite their efforts, his friends could not reach him in time to save him.
Amirul Danish was a first-year Mechanical Engineering student who, along with his friends, had visited the waterfall for leisure and swimming. The victim's body was later discovered by Fire and Rescue personnel at the bottom of the seven-meter-deep lake at 12:42 pm.
Nor Ahmad Anas further explained that he and Amirul had visited the waterfall four times since beginning their studies at the university last July. On the day of the incident, Amirul appeared cheerful and was joking around as they made the one-kilometer walk from their student residential college to the waterfall.
Meanwhile, Amirul's father, Zamri Zainodin, 55, shared his emotional experience arriving at the scene during the search and rescue operation. He had been informed by one of his other children and rushed to the location, where he witnessed the firefighters retrieve his son's lifeless body from the lake.
Zamri, an electrician, reflected on the last time he saw Amirul Danish, who was the fourth of five siblings. Amirul had returned home for a break to Kampung Seberang Pintasan just the previous Sunday. His father described him as cheerful, friendly, and helpful around the house.
Amirul Danish aspired to pursue Mechanical Engineering, inspired by his three older brothers who had studied in the same field. His remains will be laid to rest at the Seberang Pintasan Muslim Cemetery following the completion of the autopsy process.
