Kuala lumpur: Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye emphasized the importance of modernizing the police force to address evolving security challenges. He highlighted the necessity of adapting to sophisticated crimes and meeting rising public expectations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Lee stated that a contemporary police force should be professional, efficient, and founded on integrity, transparency, and genuine care for its personnel to maintain its effectiveness and trustworthiness. He emphasized that law enforcement must keep up with emerging forms of crime, such as cybercrime, financial fraud, and transnational threats. This would require ongoing investment in advanced forensic tools, AI-powered crime analysis, body-worn cameras, and digital infrastructure.

Lee underscored that public trust in the police can only be achieved through exemplary conduct. He advocated for the strengthening of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC), the institutionalization of transparent investigations, and a zero-tolerance policy on corruption. Additionally, he stressed the need for stronger community engagement via initiatives like community policing and open dialogues, suggesting that such cooperation could bridge gaps and foster mutual trust.

He further noted that a professional police force is one where personnel are respected, well-treated, and cared for, advocating for improved working conditions, fair promotion systems, mental health support, and proper housing to prevent burnout and low morale. Lee proposed reforms in recruitment and promotion practices focusing on merit and character, and he urged the establishment of robust public feedback mechanisms to safeguard the integrity of the police force and the rights of the people.
