Kuala lumpur: A powerful storm that struck the capital this evening severely damaged the roof of a block at the Seri Cempaka People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Lembah Pantai, affecting several residential units and 30 vehicles. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that an initial inspection revealed at least four units suffered serious damage when their roofs were blown off, while other units experienced leaks.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, residents of the four affected units will be immediately relocated to vacant units within the same block with assistance from youth organizations. Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is identifying available units for accommodation. Each affected family will receive initial financial assistance of RM5,000, along with basic necessities including mattresses, pillows, and blankets. Damaged school supplies will also be replaced promptly.
Fahmi, who is also the Lembah Pantai MP, mentioned that 30 vehicles were reported damaged due to roof debris, with the final count still being confirmed by authorities. To ensure safety, DBKL has been directed to take immediate action, including reassessing the structural safety of Block E and Block F with the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM). This follows complaints about leaks and flying glass shards during the storm.
Safety measures will include placing safety tape and clearing the vicinity near Block E to avoid incidents, particularly involving children. Fahmi noted one individual was injured by flying glass shards at Block F, though a full report is pending. He advised residents to file police reports for house and vehicle damage to facilitate assistance and insurance claims.
Fahmi shared that residents had informed him of a similar incident 15 years ago, prompting his ministry to ensure design and construction aspects are reviewed to prevent recurrence. Other storm-related incidents included a minor fire at Dewan Gasing Indah, extinguished by firefighters, and fallen trees along Jalan Pantai Murni and Taman Lucky Garden.
