Kuala lumpur: Pantai Penyabong, Mersing: Pantai Penyabong, located about 35km from Mersing, has emerged as a popular destination for anglers during the squid jigging season, which typically takes place between April and August. The much-anticipated annual event draws crowds from within and outside Mersing, breathing life into the jetty and coastal recreation area, popular for its serene atmosphere and scenic surroundings.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, a 37-year-old technician, Ling Kam Ming, expressed his enthusiasm for the activity, having traveled over two hours from Johor Bahru with four friends. Attracted by the beach's cleanliness and scenic beauty, Ling is eager to try squid jigging for the first time, describing it as a unique experience that adds to the allure of the pristine natural environment.

Ling shared, "I am really excited and do not want to miss the chance to experience squid jigging first-hand after friends suggested it." Koick Fatt Soon, 42, a regular visitor, echoed similar sentiments, appreciating Pantai Penyabong's appealing landscape as an ideal place to unwind after work. He noted the area's rich marine life, which includes various species such as kerapu (grouper), stingray, jenahak (red snapper), mackerel, and selar (yellowtail scad), along with prawns and crabs, though catches vary with the season.

Additionally, Pantai Penyabong serves as a weekend retreat for consultant Muhammad Mahzan, 37, who combines his fishing trips with overseeing a community project. The Kedah native, now based in Kulai, visits the beach regularly to manage the construction of a gazebo-style surau on Pulau Layak. This initiative arose from the absence of such facilities on the island during a visit early last month. The project, estimated to cost RM8,000, is funded by public contributions, with materials sourced from both Kulai and local hardware stores. While awaiting the transport of supplies to Pulau Layak, Mahzan and his friends take the opportunity to relax by fishing.
