Johor bahru: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) remain optimistic ahead of their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Elite (ACLE) 2025-26 East Zone group-stage clash against Japan’s Machida Zelvia FC at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium here tomorrow. JDT head coach Xisco Munoz said their main aim for tomorrow’s game is to stay focused on delivering their best performance, especially after losing 2-1 to Thailand’s Buriram United in their opening tie on Sept 16.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Munoz explained their strategy during a pre-match press conference, emphasizing the need to select the best starting lineup. He acknowledged the setback of having three players-Hector Hevel, Joao Figueiredo, and Jon Irazabal-suspended by FIFA for alleged forgery of documentation, but stressed the importance of squad depth and maintaining high morale.
Munoz highlighted the necessity of controlling different areas of the field, particularly midfield, and adapting to the flow of the game. He underscored maintaining possession and consistency as key strategies against top Asian teams, urging his players to avoid lapses in concentration that could lead to problems.
Defender Shane Lowry supported Munoz’s sentiments, noting the team’s strong morale and determination to meet the challenge. He recognized the J.League’s reputation and expressed the squad’s eagerness to test themselves against strong competition, emphasizing the need for mental focus throughout the match.
On the other side, Machida Zelvia head coach Go Kuroda expressed his team’s enthusiasm for their ACL debut, following a 1-1 draw with FC Seoul. Kuroda emphasized their commitment to showcasing their style and defensive strength, acknowledging JDT’s quality while asserting their readiness to compete.
Defender Yuta Nakayama mirrored his coach’s confidence, calling on his teammates to capitalize on their ACLE debut and aim for full points in their match against JDT.
