Kuala lumpur: The direction of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) and the issue of refugees require in-depth scrutiny to ensure that policies and measures remain relevant to current developments and national needs, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Saifuddin Nasution, who chaired a discussion on the two issues this morning, emphasized that neither should be viewed from a single perspective. He stressed the importance of assessing these concerns by taking into account recent developments, challenges on the ground, and possible approaches for the future. "That is why discussion platforms like this are important. We want every measure taken not merely to address immediate needs, but to be practical, well-founded and suited to current circumstances," he stated in a Facebook post today.

SOSMA, introduced in 2012, provides authorities with special measures to address security offences and replaced the Internal Security Act 1960 (ISA), which was subsequently repealed. The legislation has previously come under scrutiny, with various parties calling for its repeal or review, particularly concerning its provisions and implementation.

Meanwhile, the issue of refugees, particularly those from Myanmar, has also attracted significant public attention in recent months, amid concerns over national security, humanitarian considerations, and the management of refugee communities.
