KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government has initiated a smoking ban in designated areas and premises, a move described as strategic and timely by health advocates. The ban, effective as of yesterday, aims to cultivate a healthier, smoke-free environment across the nation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Kaswuri Keman, Chairman of the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (PEMADAM) smoking cessation service program, has voiced strong support for the new policy. He urged all parties to regard it as a positive step towards fostering a healthier generation. He emphasized that the policy should not be viewed as a rights infringement, but rather as a public health measure prioritizing the welfare of the populace.
The ban aligns with Malaysia’s commitments under the World Health Organisation (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Article 8 of the convention mandates effective measures to protect people from tobacco smoke exposure in various public areas, including indoor workplaces and public transport.
The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) has also expressed full support for the smoking ban, particularly in workplace buildings. Muhammad Sha’ani Abdullah, coordinator for FOMCA’s tobacco control and @SmokeFreeMY initiative, stated that the measure is essential for safeguarding workers’ health and contributing to the overall well-being of society and future generations.
Abdullah cited research from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United States Surgeon General, which found no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. The study estimated that tobacco use contributes to over 27,200 deaths annually in Malaysia.
He further highlighted that implementing the ban is vital for improving indoor air quality, protecting health, and reducing healthcare costs associated with tobacco-related illnesses. Consequently, he called on employers to ensure workplace buildings are smoke-free and urged authorities to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts to guarantee compliance.
