Slapping Incident During Ramadan Sparks Discussion on National Unity – Aaron

Kuala Lumpur: The recent incident involving a non-Muslim individual being reprimanded and slapped for eating in public during Ramadan has sparked significant debate about unity and harmony in Malaysia’s multicultural society. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has condemned the act, emphasizing that it contradicts the principles of coexistence that the nation upholds.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang made a strong statement against such actions, asserting that they have no place in a society that values the principles of Rukun Negara. He stressed the importance of maintaining racial harmony and urged Malaysians to engage with one another respectfully and civilly. “I strongly condemn any form of violence, discrimination, and prejudice that can threaten racial harmony,” he stated on his X account, referencing a post from user @bingbinge656.

The minister highlighted that any issues affecting national unity should be treated with seriousness, as incidents threatening Malaysia’s harmony are intolerable. He emphasized that the country’s progress depends on unity and mutual respect, free from racial or religious tension.

The victim of the incident, identified as Elijah, has filed a report at the Tampoi Police Station. Datuk Aaron mentioned that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would investigate the case under Section 323 of the Penal Code. He called for public cooperation, urging all parties to allow PDRM to conduct a thorough investigation.

Elijah shared his side of the story on the X account @bingbinge656, claiming that he was asked for his identity card as proof of not being Muslim before being slapped. He also noted that the assailant’s son intervened to calm the situation and apologized for his father’s behavior. The incident gained widespread attention after two videos, each lasting 32 and 44 seconds, went viral on social media platforms.
