Sivasangari Dominates to Reach Grasshopper Cup Semi-Finals


Zurich: Top national woman squash player and world number 11 S. Sivasangari delivered an impressive performance to defeat Egyptian Nada Abbas 11-6, 11-3, securing her spot in the semi-finals of the Grasshopper Cup 2025 in Zurich, Switzerland.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the third-seeded Sivasangari took only 15 minutes to eliminate the eighth-seeded Nada, who is also the world number 15, during the quarter-finals held at the all-glass court inside the Zurich Hauptbahnhof. This venue holds the distinction of being the largest railway station in Switzerland. Sivasangari expressed her strategy, stating, “I think inside I was a bit nervous, but I just tried to take the ball early and play my game. I didn’t want to follow her way of playing and, instead, focused on my tactics, my gameplan… and it worked well today,” as quoted on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) official website.

The Kedahan player anticipates a challenging match in the semi-finals against second seed Tinne Gilis, who defeated Eg
ypt’s Salma Hany 11-9, 11-8 in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Malaysians Ng Eain Yow and Rachel Arnold continued their impressive performance in the men’s and women’s events at the Squash On Fire Open 2025 in Washington DC, USA. Eain Yow, the second seed, came from behind to overcome Karim El Hammamy of Egypt with scores of 5-11, 11-8, 11-3, 11-3 at the Squash On Fire court, which is uniquely situated atop a fire station in the heart of Washington DC.

In the semi-finals, Eain Yow will face unseeded Kareem El Torkey, following the Egyptian’s upset victory over sixth seed Velavan Senthilkumar of India with scores of 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4, 13-11.

Rachel Arnold, the fourth seed, efficiently defeated eighth-seeded Nadine Shahin of Egypt 11-6, 11-7, 11-7, advancing to a semi-final match against top-seeded Rowan Elaraby of Egypt, who earlier bested her compatriot Salma Eltayeb 11-6, 11-5, 11-8.
