SIRIM Recognised to Lead Development of Green Steel Standards and Certification – MITI.

PETALING JAYA: SIRIM Bhd has been recognised for its capability to lead the development of green steel standards and certification, establishing the global standard for sustainably manufactured net-zero steel, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MITI deputy secretary general (investment and management) Datuk Bahria Mohd Tamil stated that this initiative marks the beginning of a new green steel revolution. She emphasized that investing in green technology-based products not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also capitalizes on the increasing demand for environmentally friendly solutions. These remarks were made during the Majlis SIRIM Industri (MSI) 2024 dinner.

Bahria further highlighted the government’s commitment to advancing the manufacturing industry by leveraging emerging global trends, particularly those related to the steel industry. She pointed out that the steel industry significantly contributes to Malaysia’s carbon e
missions, which exacerbates climate change vulnerabilities both locally and globally.

In response to these challenges, MITI is collaborating with stakeholders to develop the Green Transition Roadmap for the Iron and Steel Industry, which will align with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030). This roadmap aims to transform the industry towards more sustainable practices.

Additionally, SIRIM launched the ‘SIRIM ESG Holistic Ecosystem’, an initiative designed to support and accelerate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices across Malaysian industries. This ecosystem is intended to empower businesses to achieve sustainability goals and make meaningful contributions to both national and global environmental objectives.

The SIRIM ESG Holistic Ecosystem offers a comprehensive suite of ESG support services through SIRIM’s subsidiaries and business units, including SIRIM QAS International, SIRIM Academy, and SIRIM IR.
