Kuala lumpur: Singapore and Thailand exported 500 megawatts (MW) and 300 MW of electricity, respectively, to Malaysia during a power outage incident on October 15, as stated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. This collaboration highlighted the effectiveness of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) in supporting Malaysia’s power supply system during a crucial time.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ASEAN Power Grid is an essential initiative for the region, strengthening energy security for Malaysia and its neighboring countries. Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah emphasized this point during the policy-level debate on the Supply Bill (Budget) 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat.

Furthermore, Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), announced the government’s plan to launch the Large Scale Solar (LSS 6) Programme early next year. This initiative follows the success of LSS 5 and 5+, which have contributed 3.9 gigawatts of capacity, involved a total investment of RM12 billion, and created approximately 23,400 job opportunities.

In addition to the LSS 6 programme, the government will introduce an additional quota of 300 MW for biogas, biomass, and small hydro under the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mechanism, aiming for operational status by 2028. The Corporate Renewable Energy Scheme (CRESS) is also set for implementation, with a generation capacity of 500 MW.

Fadillah also highlighted that the government has preliminarily agreed to consider nuclear energy as part of Malaysia’s electricity generation sources. He noted that, although the initial investment for a nuclear power plant is high, the long-term Levelised Cost of Electricity (COE) is competitive, with operational lifespans ranging from 40 to 60 years. However, the government will only proceed with this option after ensuring all safety, regulatory, technical, policy, economic, and social prerequisites are adequately addressed to protect national interests and security.
